William Carey University inducted five members into the alumni Hall of Fame during the annual awards dinner March 31 at Southern Oaks House and Gardens. The inductees are Larry Harrington, Ron Herrod, Victor Mariduena, Debra Owens Mercer, and Matthew Olson, recipient of the Distinguished Young Alumnus Award.

William Carey University  inducted eight former students-athletes into the Sports Hall of Fame during the Seventh Annual Sports Hall of Fame ceremony at Southern Oaks House and Gardens on April 1. During the evening WCU also recognized John Clearman with the Legacy Award for his support of WCU athletics.

The 2017 Homecoming festivities will include a book signing for recently published alumni and faculty members. The book sale and signing will be held Saturday, April 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the Crawfish Boil and Festival at the Kennedy Sports Complex.

William Carey University alumni and guests are invited to attend the 2017 homecoming festivities on Friday, March 31 and Saturday, April 1.
“In spite of the overwhelming damage to the campus, Carey is moving forward. We didn’t miss a beat with classes, and we won’t with Homecoming, either,” said Pam Shearer, director of alumni relations. “With creative planning and the support of our terrific alumni, we will have a great Homecoming weekend.”

The Hattiesburg Campus of William Carey University has a new mailing address. The address is now:

710 William Carey Parkway
Hattiesburg, MS 39401

The actual location of the campus has not changed, only the mailing address.  Faculty and staff should  update records to replace the old Tuscan Avenue address with this new address.

The Carey Chorale and Chamber Orchestra will present Handel’s Messiah, Part Three: A Service of Thanksgiving on Sunday, April 2 at First Baptist Church in Laurel. The performance will begin at 6 p.m. and feature William Carey University students as soloists. Dr. Don Odom will conduct with accompaniment by professor Kathy Vail. Admission is free.

The William Carey University Office of Admissions will host its annual Super Saturday event on Saturday, March 25. Super Saturday is an early registration event for new freshmen and transfer students for Summer 2017 and Fall 2017. 
Students will have the opportunity to meet with advisors and register for classes from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hattiesburg Campus and at the Tradition campus in Biloxi.

Carey Dinner Theatre (CDT) will continue in the summer of 2017 despite the fact that the Tatum Theatre was heavily damaged and its support facilities totally destroyed in a tornado on Jan. 21.


The first step in continuing its rich tradition is the selection of performers and other personnel. Auditions for cast and interviews for crew for CDT’s 42nd season are Saturday, April 8 beginning at 10 a.m. in the College of Osteopathic Medicine, Room 112, on the Hattiesburg campus of William Carey University.

William Carey University student Jacob Malone is the 2017 recipient of the Michael Iler Memorial Music Scholarship. Malone is a sophomore music education major from Wilmer, Alabama. The Iler Scholarship is given on an annual basis to a worthy instrumental music student. The recipient is selected by the coordinator of instrumental activities and the other instrumental professors. The Iler Scholarship was established in memory of Carey student Michael Iler of Vancleave who died in March 2014 as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident caused by an alleged drunk driver.

William Carey University professors and graduates from the Department of Language and Literature attended the 2017 Mississippi Philological Association meeting held Feb. 10-11 on the campus of the Mississippi Valley State University.

William Carey University will offer its third annual ACT Camp for rising junior and senior high school students with a desire to attend college. The free camp focuses on helping qualified students reach an ACT score of 21 or higher. Camps will be offered in Hattiesburg and at the Tradition campus in Biloxi. 
The camp at the Tradition campus will be held Tuesday, May 30 through Friday, June 2. The Tradition campus is located at 19640 Hwy. 67, Biloxi, MS 39532.

The William Carey University School of Education has received a grant to provide training for teachers in several coastal school districts. 


WCU received the $97,139 Improving Teacher Quality grant under Title II of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. This is the third year Carey has received a grant through the program, and the second consecutive year the grant has been based on WCU’s Tradition campus.
