William Carey University Art Students to Show at Mississippi Exhibit
Hattiesburg, MS, January 26, 2010 - Five pieces of artwork by three William Carey University students were chosen from 1199 total entries to Mississippi Collegiate Art Competition on exhibit at the University of Mississippi Museum February 6 through March 6. This exhibition will include 105 total works of art representing several different categories including drawing, painting, sculpture, clay arts, glass arts, photography, computer imagery, fiber arts, graphic design, metal arts, mixed media, printmaking, and time based media.
Camille Caver, a religion major from Terry; Abby Livengood, an art major from Carriere; and Skoti Newsum, an art major from Hurley, attend WCU on the Hattiesburg campus. Of the five pieces selected Newsum had two drawings and one painting chosen. Livengood had one drawing chosen and Caver had one photograph chosen.
Carey announced a new bachelor of arts degree with an emphasis in painting and drawing as well as an art minor on the Hattiesburg campus in 2009. The Tradition campus in Biloxi continues to offer two art degrees, BFA and BA..
The Hattiesburg program fosters a strong foundation in beginning drawing, painting, and design courses which includes online courses, the use of technology in art, 3-D design, and photography.
“Advanced courses in drawing, painting and art history lead to the development of the student’s individual body of art work,” said Chatham Meade, director and curator of the Lucile Parker Gallery and instructor of art at Carey.
Other faculty include Dr. Read Diket, recipient of the Sarah Gillespie Endowed Chair and professor of art and education; Dr. Deitra Davis and Denny St. John, both adjunct faculty.
Ten Mississippi colleges and universities entered the competition.
The exhibit is open to the public free of charge. Visit the UM Museum website at
