Carey Graduate and Soccer Wall of Famer Gets Top Job
Hattiesburg, MS, January 20, 2010 - Justin Maullin, a 2000 graduate of the MBA program at the William Carey University School of Business, was recently promoted to interim head men’s soccer coach at the University of North Carolina Greensboro.
“It does not surprise me that Justin was named the head coach at UNCG,” said WCU women’s head coach Danny Owens. “Justin has been successful as a youth player, a collegiate player and an assistant coach. He has an unbelievable passion for the game and a tireless work ethic.” Owens and Maullin were teammates and roommates at Carey.
A native of Johannesburg, South Africa, Maullin’s coaching position is effective through the 2010 season. “I hope that many of our players will go on to coach after their collegiate or professional playing careers are over,” said WCU men’s head coach Nigel Boulton. “We give them a sound foundation here at Carey and also encourage them to earn their USSF national coaching licenses. It’s not just about getting a degree, it’s about preparing for the future outside college and we try to help them as much as possible.”
Carey offers a three credit hour spring soccer coaching course for current students which includes national qualification standards. “This is a quite unique arrangement between the university and the Mississippi Soccer Association,” said Boulton.
UNCG director of athletics Kim Record said, “I have been impressed with Justin Maullin’s passion for the game and his commitment to UNCG men’s soccer.”
“As a coach I know Justin from our alumni work and national conventions,” said Boulton. “He is a very driven personality. I am confident he will succeed in a head coaching position.”
