Mississippi Philological Association Annual Meeting

The Department of Language and Literature at William Carey University will host the annual meeting of the Mississippi Philological Association on February 8-9, 2013.  True to the Greek origins of the meaning of the word “philological” (fond of learning or of words), this year’s conference will feature critical, creative, and pedagogical papers limited to a reading time of fifteen minutes each.

Plenary Speaker

On Friday evening, February 8th, MPA will host a banquet and plenary lecture by Peggy Whitman Prenshaw.  Prenshaw, author of Elizabeth Spencer and editor of Conversations with Eudora Welty, will speak about her recent book Composing Selves:  Southern Women and Autobiography, which was awarded the 2011 Jules and Frances Landry Award by Louisiana University Press to recognize the text’s significant contribution to the field of southern studies.  Prenshaw is the Fred C. Frey Professor of Southern Studies Emerita at Louisiana State University and Humanities Scholar-in-Residence at Millsaps College.  She is also the recipient of a lifetime achievement award from the Society for the Study of Southern Literature as well as the Charles Frankel Prize for service to the humanities.

The menu will include a choice of roast beef au jus or fried chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, yellow squash casserole, Italian beans with new potatoes.  Featured desserts include white chocolate bread pudding and banana pudding.
