16.

A. The approximate area where the General Baptists held their first baptisms in the River Derwent in August 1791. The trees are growing on what remains of the island in the old map.

A weir existed just below this spot, just as it does today. A canal ran off the Derwent just to the left of the trees. That has now disappeared and the area is filled in to make a public park.

In the 18th century there was no bridge where the distant Exeter Bridge now stands. Houses, including John Etche's had gardens leading down to the river. The only building in the modern picture that still exists from that time is the tower of All Saints Church.
