The north-east corner of Dalhousie Square, very close to the spot where the tragedy known as the Black Hole of Calcutta took place. The church is St. Mark's (Church of Scotland). To the left is the Writer's Building which fills the north side of the square. To the right (going off the square to the east) is Bow Bazaar.

For the lady in the foreground (cooking a meal) this is her kitchen. For the figures grouped by the wall, this is their home. At night the pavement is covered with sleaping bodies. Behind the photographer is the entrance to the Great Eastern Hotel, one of the oldest and largest in Calcutta.

The square is still the heart of Calcutta.
