MEMOIR OF THE REV. WILLIAM WARD,

ONE OF THE SERAMPORE MISSIONARIES.

Philadelphia: American Sunday-School Union,

ca. 1835.

William Ward, a colleague of William Carey's in Serampore, was both a Baptist minister and a printer by trade.  In missiological history, Carey, Marshman, and Ward became known as the Serampore Trio.  For a brief biographical entry on Ward [William Cathcart, ed., The Baptist Encyclopedia,  2 vols.,  rev. ed. (Philadelphia: Louis H. Everts, 1883), II:1210], click here.  For William Carey's 1823 announcement of Ward's death, click here.

Ward's scholarly activities are evident in his two volume work:  A View of the History, Literature and Mythology of the Hindoos: Including a Minute Description of Their Manners and Customs, and Translations from Their Principal Works, 2 vols. (Serampore: Mission Press, 1815, 1818).  This work runs to over eight hundred pages.

Around 1835, the American Sunday School Union of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, published in one bound volume the two books Memoir of the Rev. William Ward, One of the Serampore Missionaries and The Sailor Boy and His Bible (copyright, 1835; see p. 4).  The American Sunday School Union published these short essays in marbelized boards (33/4 x 53/4 inches).

Memoir of the Rev. William Ward, One of the Serampore Missionaries is an account of the activities of Carey, Marshman, and Ward in India.  The Sailor Boy and His Bible is a children's story about a shipwreck.
