"Shew-board"

William Carey's Shoe Shop

William Carey was a cobbler in England prior to his becoming a Baptist minister.  One of the more interesting artifacts related to Carey's life is the placard that hung at Carey's shoe repair shop in England.

Regent's Park College, University of Oxford, holds the placard in its Angus Library.  Regent's Park College has an interesting history, including a long-time home in London.

In September, 2000, Ms. Susan J. Mills, Librarian and Archivist, Regent's Park College, permitted Bennie R. Crockett, Jr., to photograph the placard for this web page.  To view the placard, click on the links below, recognizing that these pictures may take at least two minutes to load on your browser.

In addition, Ms. Jennifer D. Thorp, Archivist at Regent's Park College, graciously contributed a formal description of the placard.  Click on the following links to read her interpretation of the placard.

With gratitude, the Center acknowledges both Ms. Mills and Ms. Thorp for their assistance  with the "Shew-board" placard and their patient explanations of and assistance with the William Carey archives at the Angus Library.
