In celebration of William Carey College's Jubilee, this highlight event featured Dr. Lalchungnunga, Principal, Serampore College, Serampore, West Bengal, India, as guest lecturer. Dr. Lal, a native of Mizoram, India, became Principal at Serampore College in 1999 after several years of university instruction and missionary work in Delhi, India.
Serampore College was established by William Carey, Joshua Marshman, and William Ward (i.e., the Serampore Trio) in 1818. In 1827, the College received a Royal Charter from King Frederick VI of Denmark. Prior to 1818, the Serampore Trio had worked together in providing education for their own children and the children--including females--of native Indians. At the College's opening, the Trio released a prospectus which proposed "A College for the instruction of Asiatic Christian and other Youth in Eastern Literature and European Science." The College was open to all persons of any caste or creed. In 1969, the Department of Posts in India honored Serampore College with a national stamp and first day issue brochure.
Dr. Lal honored William Carey College as the first principal of Serampore College to visit and lecture in William Carey College. Links are provided below that archive this significant event in the life of William Carey College. Thank you, Dr. Lalchungnunga!
