"In order to make Carey's Enquiry more useful to the modern reader, a few slight modifications have been made to the text.  Scripture references have been added where Carey did not provide them.  Many of Carey's commas have been omitted.  Some words which are not longer understood as they were two hundred years ago have been changed to their modern equivalent.  In a very few cases Carey's word order has been changed for the sake of clarity" (editor's note, p. vii).
