2003-2005

Eric Diaz (New Orleans, LA) was called up to the full Guatemala National Team and played against Jamaica in Atlanta, GA. in May of 2005. Although born in the USA he qualified for Guatemala through his parents citizenship. A skillful and powerful forward Eric still lives in New Orleans where he uses his degree in Business Administration working for Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Eric was inducted onto the Carey Wall of Fame in 2007.

2000-2004

Andy Barron (New Zealand) was All-American (2003) and All-Region (2003 and 2004). A dynamic attacking midfielder, Andy is second in the Crusader all-time leading scorer list with 52 goals. He played one season of professional soccer in Ireland before returning home for the launch of the New Zealand professional league signing for Christchurch. Barron has since been 'capped' to represent New Zealand and is currently with Canterbury United.

2000-2002

Noel Monaghan (Belfast, Northern Ireland) Left Carey in 2002 as a transfer to the University of Rio Grande. Noel was a key off-season signing for the Redmen. Redmen Coach Morrissey said. "Noel was a three-year starter at William Carey College, played in arguably the best region in the country, was at the Final Four (with Carey) in 2001 when we were there. He brought a great deal of experience to the table". Monaghan helped his new school to the 2003 NAIA National Championship. Carey lost Monaghan's services during the interval following Coach Stovall's departure and preceding the hiring of current Crusader coach Nigel Boulton in 2003. Noel has since married and moved back to south Mississippi.


1986-2002  

Doug Stovall the former Head Coach of Men’s and Women’s Soccer at William Carey College is currently (2005) the Director of Coaching for the Biloxi Soccer Organization on the Mississippi Gulf Coast following a 17 year tenure with the Crusaders in Gulfport. Stovall was three times NAIA Regional College Coach of the Year and holds a 219-89-10 (Men) and a three year (2000-02) 41-15-1 (Women) collegiate win-loss record.


1999-2001

Matt Natonick transfered to Carey from Prince George Community College in the northeast where he had won All-American honors as a goalkeeper. Matt returned to his roots after graduating with a BA in Psychology and is now (2004) an assistant coach at P.G.C.C.

 


1995-99 

Oleg Baleyev (Moscow, Russia) is currently (2004) an assistant coach at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. 'Bal' graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in management/marketing from Carey in 1999 and a Master's in business administration in 2003. All-American in 1998 and 1999 he also played for the Pensacola Flyers in the summer of 1998.

 


1998 

Jim Nowell, a native of Jackson, Miss., graduated with a bachelor's degree in coaching and sports administration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1990. He earned a master's degree in administration and supervision from William Carey College, graduating in 1998 with a 4.0 grade point average. He is currently Head Strength Coach at Mississippi State in Starkville.

Was assistant athletic director, football defensive coordinator and head strength coach at Madison Central, helping lead MCHS to the 1999 Mississippi Class 5A state footbalL championship and two state powerlifting crowns...Soccer team also won a state championship....Named Mississippi Strength Coach of the Year in 2000.


1995-98

Christi Elias is a 1998 graduate of William Carey College where she was an All-Conference and All-Region performer. Following graduation she served for two years as an assistant at W.C.C. where she helped lead her alma mater to a NAIA national ranking and the school’s first-ever appearance in the national tournament. Following her two years at William Carey, Elias taught and coached for two years at Our Lady Academy High School where she directed that program to two state championships. She was voted South Mississippi High School Coach of the Year in 2000 and Mississippi High School Coach of the Year in 2001. She assisted former Lady 'Sader head coach Melissa Heinz at Winthrop University in South Carolina before returning to Mississippi to coach at Our Lady Academy in Bay St. Louis.

1995-98

Todd Eason graduated from Carey in 1998 having been a four year starter twice garnishing All-Conference honors and a team MVP in his senior year. Eason played two years in the P.D.S.L. for the Jackson Chargers before moving on to the Charlotte Eagles. He was appointed inaugural women's head coach at Asbury College (KY) before moving to the Southern Wesleyan women's program in 2002. He was named G.A.C.C. Women's Coach of the Year in 2003. In 2005 Todd accepted the head men's coaching position at North Georgia College & State University.

 

 


1995-97

 Stephen Hoogerwerf was an N.A.I.A. Second Team All-American goalkeeper as well as an N.S.C.A.A Honorable Mention All-American at William Carey (MS) College where he attended from 1995-97. He played professionally for the New Orleans Storm of the A-League from 1998-99. He also made stops for the Cocoa Expos in 1996 and Pikes Peak Stampede in 1997, both of the P.D.L.

Hoogerwerf’s coaching career began in 1999 in his hometown of New Orleans, capturing two State Cups with the New Orleans Soccer Academy (NOSA). While there, he was Director of Goalkeeping for both NOSA and the Louisiana Olympic Development Program. One of his future goals is to establish a Brooklyn-based goalkeeping academy to develop local talent. Stephen Hoogerwerf begins his second season (2004) on the Long Island University staff, primarily responsible for the goalkeepers.

Hoogerwerf is relatively new to the tri-state region, but has been actively coaching at the club level with FC Westchester. He was recently hired (2004) to coach in the Eastern NY Olympic Development Program.

Hoogerwerf previously worked with the Manhattan Soccer Club and has trained keepers from the Eastern New York Olympic Development Program. In addition, he has done volunteer work with the Kids Island Soccer Program.


1994-97

Marco Mthumbo  played for the Kaiser Chiefs in Johannesburg, South Africa after graduating from Carey. He was selected to the South African National Team for the 2002 World Cup. Marco returned to the USA after retiring from playing professionally in 2005 and in 2006 took a graduate assistant position with his alma mate.

Newspaper  Report: "Marco Mthembu scored a brilliant goal five minutes into the second half to put Kaizer Chiefs on their way to a 2-0 win against Ghanaian giants Hearts of Oak on Saturday, and reserved a place in the final of the Vodacom Challenge Cup. Mthembu, sporting a cheeky new hairstyle, unleashed a superb strike to round off a great build-up.."

1993-97

Oleg Chickhanov, “Chick” began playing soccer in his native Russia on the Youth National Team. Later, he came to the United States to continue his career and played for William Carey College where he was a 1st Team All-American. He was drafted by 2 professional soccer leagues and went to play with the Nashville Metros (A League) and the Pensacola Flyers (EISL). “Chick” holds a USSF "A” license and is on the Mississippi Olympic Development Program coaching staff. He has been assistant coach with Meridian Community College (1997-1999) and most recently was the assistant men's and women's coach at William Carey College (1999-2003). He has been involved in youth soccer for many years and his U13 Boys team is the current Mississippi State Champion. He is the Director of Coaching for the Gulf Coast United soccer club.

1993-97

Justin Maullin  is a native of Johannesburg, South Africa and came to the U.S. in 1993. He attended William Carey College in Gulfport, Miss., where he graduated in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in management and marketing. He was chosen as Mr. William Carey College in 1996 and 1997, the same two years he served as student body president. Maullin also made the list of Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities in 1995.

He played for the Crusaders for four years, serving as the team captain and winning NAIA Academic All-America Honors. He stepped in as an assistant coach for William Carey from 1997-99 and also served as the recruiting coordinator. During that time, he helped guide the Crusaders to back-to-back NAIA Final Four appearances. He was responsible for domestic and international recruiting efforts, as well as coordinating practice and tournament schedules, handling travel plans and the annual team budget.

In 2004 he began his fifth season as an assistant coach at the University of Central Florida before leaving in 2005 to take up an assistance position at North Carolina-Greensboro.

Maullin played junior professional soccer as an apprentice in South Africa and won three national championships. In the U.S. Maullin played for the New Orleans Gamblers of the A-League in 1993, the semi-pro Cocoa Expos from 1995-1997, the Mississippi Beach Kings of the indoor pro league from 1997-1998, and with the Orlando Kraze of the Premier Development League from 1999-2001.

1993-99

Melissa Heinz was a successful student-athlete and a four-year member of the William Carey squad. During her playing career the Lady Saders went 61-20-0 while capturing four NAIA District 30 Championships and three Sub-Regional titles. She was a three-time All-Region and All-District selection and in 1994 was a NAIA Honorable Mention All-American and an Umbro/NAIA Senior Classic Bowl participant. Heinz also played two seasons on the women’s soccer amateur circuit with the Coast Chaos in Gulfport, and the Calypso team in Jackson, MS.

A native of Franklin, TN., she earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from William Carey in 1996 and a master’s degree in adult education from Southern Mississippi in 1999. Heinz has compiled a career coaching record of 50-29-4 in four years at Carey (1996-99) and in 1999 was named Coach of the Year in both the Gulf Coast Conference and NAIA Region XIII. She has coached 20 All-Conference selections, nine All-Region honorees, and six All-Americans. In 2000 she took over at Huntingdon College (AL) where she won the the Small College National Championship. In 2001 she moved on to become an assistant coach at Birmingham-Southern (AL) and in 2003 was appointed head women's soccer coach at Winthrop University in South Carolina.


1995-96

Head Coach Tom BrownTom Brown is in his ninth season at Angelo State (2005).  Brown was hired in August of 1997 as the Rambelles third head coach for the program.  Brown, a former player and alumni of Midwestern State, was at William Carey College in Gulfport, Mississippi, prior to his appointment at ASU. As the head women's coach at William Carey College in Gulfport, Mississippi, he led WCC to a national ranking as high as number two in the nation in NAIA play in 1995 and was the Gulf Coast Conference Coach of the Year in 1995 and 1996. His team was also one of only 28 teams nationwide to earn an NSCAA Team Academic Award, with a team grade point average of 3.35. During his two years at WCC, Brown coached four All-Americans, 10 all-region selections and five academic All-Americans. In addition to his coaching duties, Brown also served as an assistant athletic director and instructor. Prior to his two seasons at WCC, Brown was the head men's and women's soccer coach at Sterling College in Kansas. He led the women's team to its first ever appearance in the national rankings and was the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1994. Brown also served as an assistant men's and women's coach at the University of Tulsa for two years, and has held assistant positions at Southern Nazarene (Okla.) and Midwestern State.

1992-95

Phil Hindson

Phil Hindson began his first year as an assistant coach at Clemson (2004) after a successful stint as an assistant Coach at Winthrop. Hindson, a native of Perth, Scotland, and a graduate of William Carey College, was at Winthrop for four years.

Hindson was a three-time All-Conference, All-Region and 1995 All-America selection while playing for NAIA top-ranked William Carey College. He still holds several scoring records at William Carey with 54 goals and 22 assists for 130 points in three seasons.

Hinson graduated with a B.S. degree in physical education with a minor in psychology at William Carey in 1999. He worked on his master's degree in physical education with an emphasis in health and will be awarded this degree upon the completion of the thesis. In 1995, he was a forward for the Nashville Metros of United Systems of Independent Soccer Leagues. From 1996-97 he was with the Cocoa Expos (USISL) which reached the national tournament both seasons. He closed out his professional career with the Pensacola Flyers of the Eastern Indoor Soccer League.

- 1995

Lisa English begins her first season (2004) as the East Mississippi Community College Lady Lions soccer coach and assistant softball coach. She comes to E.M.C.C. after serving as an assistant softball coach at William Carey College in Hattiesburg, MS.

Coach English was a standout softball player at West Jones High School and continued her playing days at Jones Jr. College, Mississippi University for Women, and William Carey College.

While at William Carey, she earned All-Region 23 and All-State honors. After her playing days, she began her coaching career at Jones Jr. College in 1996, and has also spent time at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and William Carey. Coach English in single and calls Laurel, MS her home.


1991-94

Bill Findley compiled a four year record of 61-20 with the Lady 'Saders. He moved on to become the first ever women's soccer coach at Mississippi State in 1995 an honor he had previously enjoyed at Carey beginning the program in 1991. A graduate of Tennessee Temple in Chattanooga Findley received his Master's from the University of Tennessee in 1984. Findley resigned in November 1999 from Mississippi State to pursue other career interests.  He moved on to Ohio where he was the Chief Operating Officer for an inner city rescue mission called the Cherry Street Mission.  Later accepted an Executive Pastor position with a large church of 7000 people in the Toledo area where I directed the Outreach and Compassion ministries.  Most recently Findley re-entered the soccer coaching world as one of the coaching director's for a large organization called Pacesetter Soccer Club in Northwest Ohio.

Head Coach Sarah ComeauxSarah Comeaux, an accomplished NAIA and NCAA Division I soccer player made her head coaching debut in 2001 for Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois (left 2003). Comeaux, knows a little about scoring goals. She led the nation in that department as an NAIA player at William Carey College and then topped the powerful SEC in scoring as an upperclassman at the University of Mississippi.

Robert Hensarling the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Samford University is in his ninth year (2004) as a full-time member of the Samford athletic training staff. He joined Samford as an assistant athletic trainer in October 1995. A former Samford student athletic trainer and a graduate of Samford's sports medicine program, Hensarling works primarily with football and spring sports. Additionally, he serves as a clinical instructor in the Athletic Training Education Program.

Hensarling came to Samford after a short stint as a head athletic trainer at Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit, Miss. Prior to that, he served for two years as a graduate assistant at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he was responsible for treating athletes in baseball, women's basketball and volleyball. He also assisted with football and men's basketball, and he worked as an instructor in athletic training classes. Before moving to USM, Hensarling was a graduate assistant at William Carey College while working for the Sports Medicine Institute of Methodist Hospital in Hattiesburg, Miss.

A certified member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association, Hensarling is also a member of the Southeast Athletic Trainers' Association. He is licensed by the Alabama Board of Athletic Trainers, and was a member of the Mississippi Athletic Trainers' Association before joining Samford.

Hensarling holds a master of science in athletic administration from the University of Southern Mississippi. A native of McComb, Miss., he is married to the former Megan Capehart of Brentwood, Tenn., a former member of Samford's softball team.
