Inaugural Inductees (2007)

OLEG CHICKANOV ('96)

“Chick” began playing soccer in his native Russia on the Youth National Team. He left the former Soviet Union to come to the United States and began his career as a Crusader where he became a 1st Team All-American and an Academic All-American. He was drafted by two professional soccer leagues and went on to play with the Nashville Metros (A League) and the Pensacola Flyers (EISL) after graduating from Carey. “Chick” holds a USSF "A” license and is on the Mississippi Olympic Development Program coaching staff. He had been an assistant coach with Meridian Community College (1997-1999) and most recently was the assistant men's and women's coach at William Carey College (1999-2003). He has been involved in youth soccer for many years and is currently the Director of Coaching for the Gulf Coast United soccer club based in Gulfport, Mississippi.

 

 

 

OLEG BALEEV ('97)

"Bal" was appointed the head men's soccer coach at Jones County Junior College in Ellisville, Mississippi in 2007. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in management/marketing from Carey in 1999 and a Master's in business administration in 2003. An All-American in 1998 and 1999 he also played professionally for the Pensacola Flyers in the summer of 1998.

 

 

 

 

MARCO MTHEMBU ('97)

Marco was an All-American in 1997 after being a second team All-American the previous year. A native of Durban, South Africa he played professionally for the Kaiser Chiefs and Ajax and was called up to the South African national squad during his career after graduating from Carey. After retiring from the professional game with a tremendous reputation behind him he returned to the the U.S. and is currently coaching youth soccer for Hattiesburg Youth Soccer and is a graduate assistant coach at the University of Southern Mississippi for the women's program.

 

 

 

JUSTIN MAULLIN ('97) 

Justin is a native of Johannesburg, South Africa and came to the U.S. in 1993 to become a Crusader graduating in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in management and marketing. He was chosen as Mr. William Carey College in 1996 and again in 1997, the same two years he served as student body president. Justin also made the list of Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities in 1995. He played for the Crusaders for four years, serving as the team captain and winning N.A.I.A. Academic All-America Honors. He stepped in as an assistant coach for the Crusaders from 1997-99 and also served as the recruiting coordinator. During that time, he helped guide the Crusaders to back-to-back N.A.I.A. Final Four appearances. He was responsible for domestic and international recruiting efforts, as well as coordinating practice and tournament schedules, handling travel plans and the annual team budget. He left Carey to become assistant at the University of Central Florida where he spent five years before leaving in 2005 to take up an assistant position at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Justin also played for the New Orleans Gamblers of the A-League in 1993, the semi-pro Cocoa Expos from 1995-1997, the Mississippi Beach Kings of the indoor pro league from 1997-1998, and with the Orlando Kraze of the Premier Development League from 1999-2001.

 

MILTON GRIFFITHS ('98)

 

Milton was a 2nd team All-American in '95 and 1st team All-American in '98 his senior year. Born in Montego Bay, Jamaica he heads a long line of Jamaican players that have graced the Carey teams. He was also named to the 2008 N.A.I.A. All-Tournament team.

 

 

 

 

PHIL HINDSON ('99)

Phil began his first year as an assistant coach at Clemson (S.C.) in 2004 after a successful four year stint as an assistant coach at Winthrop University. A native of Perth, Scotland he graduated from Carey in 1999. Hindson was a three-time All-Conference, All-Region and 1995 All-America selection. He still holds the all-time scoring record at William Carey with 54 goals and 22 assists for 130 points in three seasons. He graduated with a B.S. degree in physical education with a minor in psychology. He worked on his master's degree in physical education with an emphasis in health and will be awarded this degree upon the completion of the thesis. In 1995, he played forward for the Nashville Metros of the USISL (now USL). From 1996-97 he was with the Cocoa Expos (USISL) team which reached the national tournament both seasons. He closed out his professional career with the Pensacola Flyers of the Eastern Indoor Soccer League .

 

 

 

DANNY OWENS ('00)

Danny gained 1st team All-American honors as a Crusader in 1999. Following obtaining his degree 2000 he went on to get his Masters in Psychology from Carey and in 2005 returned to his alma mater as the head women's soccer coach.  

 

 

 

 

 

MARK SPEARS ('01)

Mark, from Kansas City, Missouri gained 1st team All-American honors as a goalkeeper for the Crusaders in 2000 and also made the All-Tournament team the same year. He now lives and works in San Diego, California.

 

 

 

 

 

 

ANDREW BARRON ('04)

'Andy' is a current member of the New Zealand national team. His most recent cap was against Wales on May 28th 2007. Second in the All-Time leading scorers list for the Crusaders. A dynamic attacking midfielder with a powerful shot and great first touch, Andy also scored on his national team debut against Malaysia in 2006. Andy was a 2nd team All-American in 2002 while at Carey. After graduating with his degree in business he played a season in Ireland for Distillery before returning home to New Zealand to play professionally for Canterbury. In 2008 he returned to the US to play for the Minnesotta Thunder.

 

 

 

 

ERIC DIAZ ('05)

Eric was called up to the Guatemala National Team in 2005 gaining his only cap to date as a substitute against Jamaica in a game played in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated in 2005 with a business degree and although born in New Orleans, Louisiana in the U.S. Eric qualified for Guatemala through his parentage. A skillful and powerful forward he played for the New Orleans Shell Shockers.

 

 

 

 

WAYNE ROBERTSON ('89) INDUCTED 2008

Wayne is the earliest graduate to have made the Wall of Fame. Born in South Africa he arrived at William Carey on the Coast in Gulfport for the inaugural year of the soccer program and provides a link and a bridge from the past to the present. Wayne was captain and an NAIA All-Star and made the all-Tournament team at the National Finals during his time as a Crusader. He currently lives in Jacksonville, Florida. full story here
