CAREY FALLS IN CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Cleveland, TN- #12 William Carey University women’s soccer team dropped their first game of the season as the Lady Crusaders fell to #1 Lee University, 2-0 in the 2007 Region XIII Championship Game.

The Lady Flames opened the scoring in the tenth minute of play with a goal from Jenna Achton. Following the shaky start, Carey settled down and began to exert itself on the offensive end. The Lady Crusaders had three excellent opportunities to score but was unable to notch the tying goal and went into the half down 1-0.

In the second half the Lady Flames added to their halftime lead quickly as leading scorer Janaina Novaes scored her 35th goal of the season just 60 seconds into the half.

After the early goal both teams clamped down defensively and the Lady Flames limited the Lady Crusaders offensive opportunities and Carey was unable to notch the tying goals in the half.

“We didn’t take advantage of opportunities to score in the first half and that hurt us,” said Carey head coach Danny Owens. “I am very pleased with the girl’s effort; it just goes to show that we can play with the best teams in the country,” added Owens.

With the loss Carey wraps up its season with a 19-1-1 record.
