The
William Carey University women's soccer team is 13-0 and ranked No. 16
nationally in the latest NAIA poll and No. 2 in the NAIA Region XIII
poll.
The Lady Crusaders defeated Louisiana College
6-0 Saturday.
Danny Owens, in his third year as coach of the
Lady Crusaders, talked about his team in a question and answer format.
Q. What does it mean to receive such
recognition?
A. It's good. It helps with recruiting
but even more, it's good for the girls because they work so hard. It's a
brand new team and a brand new program and the girls have worked hard
over the two years.
Q. Has the national ranking increased
interest at the school in women's soccer?
A. Somewhat. We'll see in the end of the
recruiting year if it helps or not. We're definitely getting more
recognition and recognition from other schools.
Q. How does this team compare to Carey
teams of the past?
A. My first year, I started in an August
and the season started that August so this is really my second
recruiting class. Last year we were very, very young - all freshmen and
sophomores. This year, we're more mature and I think the greatest
attribute with this team is we're a team where everyone fights and works
for each other. It's a real special group this year with the way the
girls get along.
Q. How far do you think you can go
with this team?
A. I don't know, that's a good question.
The girls have done a really good job of just keeping focused on the
next game. We just talk about letting the postseason worry about itself.
We just worry about going 1-0. It'll be a tough road. It's a special
team and I think we could have a really good season if we keep
improving.
Q. What will it take to keep this
success going?
A. We just need to stay focused and not
worry about ranking and being undefeated. Every game we talk about
winning the next one and not looking ahead or let's not worry about an
undefeated season. We just talk about winning and going 1-0, that's
really been our motto. If the girls can keep that up, they have done a
good job to this point, I think we'll be fine.
Q. Who are some of the standouts on
the team?
A. We have a few. Defensively, Whitney
Stewart and Norma Valasquez. They have been with me all three years.
They are outstanding. We've had five shutouts this year so they've been
good on defense along with Aimi Beresford. She's been tremendous for us
and really, just a supporting cast from everyone else. We don't have one
girl scoring goals, we're getting a lot of goals from everybody.
