Hattiesburg, MS- #13 William Carey University women’s soccer team captured the 2007 GCAC Championship with a 6-1 victory of LSU-Shreveport Saturday night at the WCU Soccer Complex.

Carey jumped all over the Lady Pilots for the start scoring two goals in the opening five minutes of play as Shanya Turner found Natalia Nino in the 2^nd minute of play for the opening goal and then hooked up with Aimi Beresford in the 5^th minute of play to the give the Lady Crusaders a 2-0 advantage.

LSUS settled down after the tough start and trimmed the Carey lead to 2-1 with a goal from Rachel Alexander in the 24^th minute. But the Lady Crusaders went back on the attack and reestablished their two goal lead in the 36^th minute with a goal from GCAC player of the year Shannon Steffan.

Carey broke the game wide open in the 54^th minute with a goal from Linda Garcia. Jeana Erickson sealed the championship with two goals in the 86^th and 87^th minutes of play.

“It has been a really good season and it is tough to go undefeated and capture the Conference Championship; the girls have done well and hopefully we can carry this momentum into the Region XIII tournament,” said Carey head coach Danny Owens.
