CAREY PLACES SIX ON ALL-REGION WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM

 

HATTIESBURG, MS- William Carey University women’s soccer team placed six members on the 2007 NAIA All-Region XIII team as voted on by Region XIII coaches.

 

Carey, who finished this past season with a 19-1-1 record and was runner-up in the Region XIII tournament, placed junior defender Whitney Stewart (pictured left) from Pascagoula, MS, and sophomore midfielder Aimi Beresford (picured right) from Normanton, England, on the first team; while senor forward Danielle Princiotta from Ocean Springs, MS, sophomore forward Shannon Steffen from Frisco, TX, freshman goalie Valerie Split-Log from Baton Rouge, LA, and senior defender Norma Velasquez from Irving, TX, was selected to the second team.

 

“Anytime a team has as much success as we did this year, you hope that your players will be recognized for their efforts. It is an honor to the program to have 6 girls recognized on the All Region team.  To have 2 players recognized on the 1st team as the best players in our region says a lot about those players and our team.  All 6 of these players had a huge impact on our success,” said Carey Head Coach Danny Owens.

 

Stewart earns her second selection to the All-Region team as she was selected to the All –Region XIII second team last season. Stewart along with Split-Log (left, center)) and Velasquez (below, right) anchored a Carey defense that allowed just 16 goals in 21 games and recorded 13 shut outs.

 

Beresford, Princiotta (below, left), and Steffen (below, center) led a balanced Carey offensive attack. Steffen, who was selected as GCAC player of the Year, totaled 32 points on the season which included 13 goals. Beresford totaled 26 points as she recorded 9 goals and 8 assists. Princiotta finished the season with 21 points on the season including 9 goals.

 

Carey finished the season ranked 12th in the final NAIA regular season poll.
