4.28.07 TEN INDUCTED INTO INAUGURAL WALL
OF FAME
Ten
former Crusader players were inducted into the inaugural Wall of Fame on
Saturday. They included current Lady 'Sader head coach
Danny Owens ('00), former Mr. Carey and Student President Justin Maullin ('97), all-time leading
points scorer Phil Hindson ('99) and Andrew Barron
('04). Maullin is the assistant coach at the University of North
Carolina-Greensboro, Hindson is the assistant at powerhouse Clemson
University while Barron is currently playing professionally in New
Zealand. Other inductees were former Crusader assistant coach Oleg Chickanov
(96) who was an All-American at Carey, All-American Oleg Baleev
(97) now the head coach at Jones Junior College and All-American
Marco Mthembu (97) who played professionally in South Africa and was
called up to that countries national team. Former 'keeper and
All-American Mark Spears (01), two time All-American Milton
Griffiths (98), and Guatemalan National Team player Eric Diaz (05)
round out the first ten inaugural inductees. The WOF luncheon was well
attended and WCU President Tommy King was in attendance. The Alumni game
was played in a competitive nature with the 'old guard' taking the lead
before fitness told and the current Crusader squad ran out 4-2 winners.
Later that evening the alumni and family gathered at Coach Owens home
for a traditional southern crawfish boil. Below: Former players Robert 'Chuckie' Montgomery (05) and
Oleg Baleev (97) pictured at the Saturday evening crawfish boil.
