4.26.08 Robertson inducted onto Wall of Fame

South African born Wayne Robertson who now lives in Jacksonville, Florida became the 11th inductee onto the men's soccer Wall of Fame and the only inductee for 2008.

Robertson represents the origins of the Carey soccer program from it's genesis in Gulfport. As a strong attacking midfielder he won numerous honors as a Crusader and graduated in 1989 with a BSc. and an MBA in 1990.

Robertson remembered arriving at Carey (on the Coast) in 1987 to begin his American adventure with former coach Doug Stovall picking him up "....in his red truck at the Greyhound bus station and taking me over to the college. As we drove in I found it strange that there wasn't a soccer field on campus, only a large unkempt field, which in some places had lots of overgrown weeds and in other places had no grass at all. I asked Doug (former coach Stovall) where the field was and he said "That's it son, you're looking at it!"

After that first season it was obvious we had to start recruiting more quality players, and not just numbers. I also realized that with no name recognition we were going to have a difficult time recruiting American players. So, with coach Stovall's blessing, I began a process which I think changed the complexion of the team forever - I started recruiting fellow South Africans ... and so began the international make up of the W.C.C. team".

Robertson captained the Crusaders and won All-District honors as well as being selected to the N.A.I.A. All-Star (East) team at their Senior Bowl and the National Championship All-Tournament team.

However, Robertson assures, "... more satisfying than personal accolades was the fact that I helped build a great team that went on to be one of the N.A.I.A. powerhouses and more importantly, I've assisted in bringing over my fellow South Africans so that they can pursue their dreams in this beautiful country"
