7.18.09 National Champ Headlines New Recruits
Salas Junior midfielder Tito Salas headlines the Crusader recruiting class of 2008. Salas is a two time National Champion at the junior college level with Richland Community College in Dallas, Texas. Coach Nigel Boulton thinks highly of Salas and expects him to make an instant impression on the team. "Tito is an excellent player, two footed, sharp and intelligent. On the field he has everything in a midfielder, great creativity and the ability to score goals as well understanding that good defense is equally as important to his role".
Local Talent Coming in from Mississippi is junior college transfer Gustavo Clavijo a standout midfielder from Gulf Coast Community College, another expected to force his way into the first team picture. Clavijo will be hoping to emulate Ryan Wheelock's progress of last year. Wheelock also came in as a junior from GCCC. Freshman recruits Drew Garner, a powerful forward from Gulfport High School and Blayze Kraft (Goalkeeper) add to the strength in depth along with Allen Ramsey from Arizona. Ramsey is already enrolled in school after graduating high school early and attending spring classes at Carey. "Allen had a great spring practice and has come on a lot. If he keeps up that kind of progress in pre-season he will be knocking on the door" said Boulton. Ramsey played all but a year of his high school soccer at Biloxi HS before moving to Arizona.
Internationals Other recruits for '08 include a quartet of English freshmen. Jonny Fairbairn (left) is a 6' plus central defender who is expected to press hard for a starting place after being released as a youth player by Scottish League team St. Johnstone. Two players from the English south coast will arrive as clubmates already. Jake White and Ryan Weir were both youth team players at Torquay United. White is a defender and Weir a dynamic, energetic striker. Elliot Dyke from Shropshire is a defender or midfield player and rounding out the international recruits is Alexi Mikheev from Russia.

Conn Man Another freshman is Michael MacBeth from Connecticut. "Michael came in for the winter term and settled well. He has worked hard at his game in the spring and will be looking to impress during the pre-season period. It is always satisfying to see players improving and working hard to make the team" commented Boulton. Copyright © 2008 William Carey University. Privacy Statement | Terms of Use | Web Mail |
