9.24.07 Men Notch First Road Win

On Friday the Crusaders (3-7) notched a first road win of the season in Tupelo, MS against Robert Morris University from Chicago. In a three team event the men opened impressively to win 4-1 on goals from Fr. Orane Swaby, So. Scott Beatty, Fr. Brendan Connolly and Fr. Carl Reynolds. Carey led 2-0 at the half but were pegged back by Alex Schneider's 54th minute strike but recovered to trot out easy winners.

On Saturday the men were looking for a weekend double against Daemen College of New York. The win looked on the cards as the Crusaders again dominated play taking a 1-0 lead on Jr. Scott McCulloch's goal. However they failed to make the most of their chances and allowed the New Yorkers to level just before the break. Both teams played out a goalless second period with Carey again dominating but failing to find the net. The O.T. periods took the same pattern but it was Daemen who sneaked the win 3 minutes from time.

The Crusaders are having difficulty turning possession into goals and lost on Tuesday (18th) to Belhaven College in a GCAC match-up in Jackson, MS. This was another game in which the Crusaders were the better team and lost. Belhaven came out ahead as the Blazers capitalized on an error by freshman goalkeeper Carl Goody who failed to clear and allowed James Poole to score what proved to be the winner in the 31st minute.

"This is a very tough time for everyone. We are making elementary errors both on offense and defense and it is costing us dearly. Yes, injuries and the youth of the side has something to do with it  but losing these games is almost unbelievable at times. We should have beaten Delta State, Belhaven and Daemon. We'll just keep learning, plugging away and try to turn it around.", commented coach Nigel Boulton. The current team is regularly fielding six to eight freshman and has just one senior in the squad.
