7.24.07 1st Annual Residential Camp a Success
William Carey women’s soccer hosted its first Residential High School Soccer camp (July 17, 18, & 19) over this past weekend and things went great with almost 100 campers. 5 schools were represented from the local area. Pascagoula High School, Gautier High School, 5A State Champions Gulfport High School, Pearl River Central, and Menard High School from Alexandria, LA were schools who attended the 3 day camp.
Teams checked in on Thursday afternoon and began immediately with a field session and met their designated coach. That evening, the teams geared up for games against each other. On Friday and Saturday the teams were put through a technical session in the morning and then a tactical/team session after lunch. The teams rotated playing one another every evening.
“I am very excited with the
way things went this weekend. We had some good teams here which made the
games very competitive in the evening. The girls were great and really
took care of their body with the excruciating heat. They wore down
Saturday evening, but we were very lucky that we did not have
any
injuries or anyone overheating” said Coach Owens. “We had an unbelievable
staff, which I feel separates our camp from a lot of other camps. We hire
only professional coaches who make a living coaching at some level.
We were able to provide a Goalkeeper trainer for all the teams and one coach for
each team. All the coaches have played at a high level, 4 of which were
Carey Alumni, and really challenged the girls and educated them on the game.”
William Carey plans to continue the camp over the same weekend every summer and hopes to continue to grow. If anyone is interested in bringing their high school team for next year, please contact Danny Owens dowens@wmcarey.edu or keep looking on the website for more information.
