6.10.09 Hard road ahead for Crusaders
Following the announcement of the opening weekend of games the full schedule for 2008 has been released and it will be a hard road ahead for the Crusaders as they look to repeat as G.C.A.C. Champions.
Following the opening road trip to Houston, Texas, to play the University of Texas at Brownsville and the University of St Thomas over Labor Day weekend the Crusaders then travel to Cleveland, Tennessee to play #17 nationally ranked Lee University (16-5-3), September 6th. "It really is a tough opening" commented coach Nigel Boulton "and it doesn't get any easier the rest of the way".
Nationally ranked opponents It certainly doesn't. The team will travel to Mobile to play the Rams nationally ranked at #6 but who were downed by Carey in the GCAC Championship game last November. That game is September 23rd with a trip to #17 nationally ranked the University of West Florida (NCAA D-2) three days later.
October 4th sees a trip back to Texas, this time to Tyler to take on Texas College before returning to Houston, October 17th & 18th to play the University of Texas of the Permian Basin (NCAA D-2) and NCAA D-1 Houston Baptist (10-3). Both games will be played in Houston at the home of the Huskies.
The road schedule is rounded out with trips to Crichton College in Memphis (TN), October 25th and to GCAC foe Spring Hill College on the 28th for the last regular season game.
Home slate The first chance of seeing the 2008 Crusaders in meaningful action will be August 19th against the University of Montevallo, Alabama (NCAA D-2) another nationally ranked team finishing the '07 season as #4 in the nation. "This pre-season game should be a beauty, one which will give us a good idea of where we are in our preparations for the regular season." explained Boulton. There is an Alumni game on the 23rd of August.
The regular season home schedule opens September 13th against Concordia of Alabama, conference rival Belhaven on the 16th and Louisiana College on the 30th. In a busy October period the Crusaders entertain Reinhardt College from Georgia on the 10th, Thomas University, Georgia on the 11th and Trevecca Nazarene from Nashville, Tennessee on the 13th.
