9.2.07 Carey Knocks Off Embry Riddle in Thriller
Hattiesburg, MS- William Carey University women’s soccer used a six goal outburst to knock-off Embry Riddle University (FL) 6-4 Friday afternoon at the WCU soccer complex.
Carey found themselves in an early hole after Elin Johnansson opened the scoring in the 6th minute of play to put Embry Riddle up 1-0. However, the Lady Crusaders responded with goals from Danielle Princiotta and Jeana Erickson to put Carey up 2-1 in only the 9th minute.
But the Carey lead was short lived as Kristen Phelps and Johnansson connected on goals in the 12th and 22nd minute to put the Lady Eagles up 3-2.
Carey was able tie things up 3-3 as Princiotta connected on her second goal of the game in the 36th minute.
In the second half Carey dominated the action for much of the half. Aimi Beresford connected on a penalty kick in the 50th to put Carey up for good. Linda Garcia added her first goal of the season in the 70th off of a free kick to give the Lady Crusaders a 5-3 advantage.
The Lady Eagles made things interesting in the final minutes as the trimmed the lead to 5-4 off of a Valerie Rogers goal in the 80th minute. The Lady Crusaders proved too strong for the Lady Eagles and Erickson finished off the scoring with a sensational shot in the 85th minute to give Carey a 6-4 victory.
With the win Carey improves to 2-0 on the season. The Lady Crusaders return to action on Labor Day as they take on Lambuth University (TN) at 11 am at the WCU soccer complex
