CAREY WOMEN OPEN 2007 SEASON WITH VICTORY

Hattiesburg, MS-  The William Carey University women’s soccer team opened the 2007 season with a 4-0 victory over Southern University-Baton Rouge at the WCU soccer complex.

The Lady Crusaders kept the Jaguars on the defensive with a relentless offensive onslaught. Carey blasted 33 shots in the game and limited the visitors to 6 shots.

However, in the first half Carey did not take advantage of numerous opportunities to score and went into the half tied at 0-0.

In the second half the Carey attack proved too much for the Jaguars. Shannon Steffen broke the ice for the Lady Crusaders in the 59^th minute as she took an Aimi Beresford pass and planted it in the right side of the goal to give Carey a 1-0 lead.  

Shayne Turner literally copied Steffen’s goal with one of her own in the 65^th minute off a Beresford pass and to the right side to put Carey up 2-0.

Steffen added another goal in the 75^th minute and Jeana Erickson capped off the scoring with her first goal of the year in the 78 minute.

Beresford ended the game with 3 assist and Sagan Elliot had one.

Next up for the Lady Crusaders is Embry Riddle University (FL) on August 31^st. Kick-off is set for 5:00 pm at the WCU Soccer Complex
