CAREY WOMEN OPEN 2007 SEASON WITH VICTORY

Hattiesburg, MS-  The William Carey University women’s soccer team opened the 2007 season with a 4-0 victory over Southern University-Baton Rouge at the WCU soccer complex.

The Lady Crusaders kept the Jaguars on the defensive with a relentless offensive onslaught. Carey blasted 33 shots in the game and limited the visitors to 6 shots.

However, in the first half Carey did not take advantage of numerous opportunities to score and went into the half tied at 0-0.

In the second half the Carey attack proved too much for the Jaguars. Shannon Steffen broke the ice for the Lady Crusaders in the 59th minute as she took an Aimi Beresford pass and planted it in the right side of the goal to give Carey a 1-0 lead.

Shayne Turner literally copied Steffen’s goal with one of her own in the 65th minute off a Beresford pass and to the right side to put Carey up 2-0.

Steffen added another goal in the 75th minute and Jeana Erickson capped off the scoring with her first goal of the year in the 78 minute.

Beresford ended the game with 3 assist and Sagan Elliot had one.

Next up for the Lady Crusaders is Embry Riddle University (FL) on August 31st. Kick-off is set for 5:00 pm at the WCU Soccer Complex
