2.25.07 CAREY SIGNEE HELPS VANDY TO STATE TITLE

Vanderbilt High School in Houma, Louisiana won an unprecedented third straight 4A-boy's high school state soccer title Sunday. Carey recruit Mitchell Barker is a member of the victorious team and will join the Crusaders in the summer. Vanderbilt Catholic coach Doug Hamilton said of defender Barker's performance.“He was incredible. I don’t think they (opponents E.A. Spartans) ever got past him”.

2.7.07.   NATIONAL SIGNING DAY SEES CAREY RECRUIT FROM FAR AND WIDE

It’s been a busy winter for William Carey University head soccer coach Nigel Boulton. The team loses six seniors from 2006 and he has been working hard to bring in new players who will help keep the Crusaders amongst the elite of regional and national soccer programs. The team went 10-6-1 last year and has never had a losing season in its 17-year history.

A look at the geography of the incoming freshmen gives evidence to Boulton’s recruiting drive and reach. He returned from a trip to England in December and has announced the signing of excellent left-sided defender Robert Rogers (right) from the successful Cirencester Academy program. “Current freshman goalkeeper Sean Mapsen was also recruited from the Cirencester program so we know the quality is high” explained Boulton.

Closer to home, Hattiesburg High School stand-out Alex Royals (left) has committed along with Thomas Lambert (right) of Lafayette H.S. in Oxford (MS). “Both Alex and Thomas were determined to play here at Carey. We’re glad it has worked out for them” said Boulton.

Midfielder Scott Wetherington was Boulton's first ‘07 commitment when he agreed to join from the top level Darlington Academy program in Rome, Georgia. Boulton revealed that, “Scott is the type of freshmen who can immediately push for a starting place. We are a young team and it is a good time for him to come into the program”.

Defender Mitchell Barker (left) hails from Louisiana and was a teammate of three current Crusader players, Jerod Wooley, Rick Beebe and Elliott Lewis who all played with him at Vanderbilt H.S. in Houma. Rounding out the eight is Stephen McArthur (right) from Perry Central in New Augusta, Mississippi. Boulton expects to name more signings within the next few months.

LATE NEWS: Gulf Coast Community College captain, M.V.P., All-State and All-Region team player Ryan Wheelock made a late decision for the Crusaders and was added to the '07 signing class on deadline day. Ryan played his high school soccer at Biloxi H.S. where he was also captain and an All-State standout. "I'm delighted Ryan has chosen to step up to the next level here at Carey", said Boulton.

1.19.07  Crusader Wall of Fame

The Crusader soccer program is to unveil it's 'Wall of Fame' April 27th. The inaugural induction of former players will be the center piece of an alumni weekend which will include a golf tournament, an alumni game, the awards dinner and a kids party. "This will be a great weekend and has been a long time coming" explained Crusader coach Nigel Boulton. "Carey soccer has been blessed with some special players and some special people over the years, it is only right that we recognize their achievements both on and off the field". The idea for the Wall of Fame came about following the successful alumni games that have been played in the past few years. Boulton continued, "The alumni games were so competitive and so many former players wanted to make these games that it was apparent there was a lot of pride in the Carey program. All the past players I bumped into throughout the country were always excited to learn more about our move to Hattiesburg and the progress of the team. They all want us to be successful. It seems only right we honor them in return." A criteria for induction into the W.O.F. has been set and can be viewed at the link below. Alumni are welcome to suggest players they think will fit the criteria. Boulton said he expects "at least five or six to meet the standard for the inaugural induction".

10.30.06 Young Crusaders Finish on Win Go 10-6-1

Senior defenders Juan Adan of Houston, TX (left), Thomas Hill from Mesquite, TX (middle) and senior goalkeeper Florent Sourice from Anjou, France (right) completed their collegiate careers on a win and a shut-out as the Crusaders downed Concordia-Selma (AL) by 3-0 in the final game of the 2006 season. The Crusaders compiled a ten win record going 10-6-1. The team loses only three senior starters for 2007/08. Other graduating seniors for 2006/07 were goalkeeper Ryan Woods of Elberta, AL (bottom left), Drew Gallant (bottom center) and Clifton Marshall (bottom right) both of Hattiesburg, MS. Woods was injured but both Gallant and Marshall entered the game in the second period. Coach Boulton spoke highly of all six seniors. "Woodsy, Drew and Cliffy have been a tremendous part of this program. They may not have had much game time over the years but their attitude and competitiveness in training has helped many players become better because of it. Drew is a married man, a dad and has balanced his home life with school and soccer, a remarkable feat. I wish him the very best for the future, I remember him as a skinny 16 year old at summer camp, he's grown up a lot since then. Woodsy, whatever we put him through, never gave in until he had nothing left to give. Clifton we should all respect. He is in the military as well as in school and his discipline and behavior is everything you would expect from a U.S. soldier. He has more respect from me for his service to this country than anything any soccer player could have achieved here at Carey.

Juan Adan has been a wonderful addition to our squad since his transfer from San Jacinto J.C. in Houston TX. He was nervous about moving from the big city to a small Mississippi town but he has settled well at Carey and we have both gained from the experience. Thomas Hill has been a 4-year starter and was one of my first recruits and together with Florent they will be the first of my 4-year recruits to graduate. They will always have a special place in my heart. Thomas may go on to play after college but his business degree should mean every bit as much to him. Florent is an academic All-American and a truly special person. France can be proud of him".
