The Mission

The William Carey University Master of Biomedical Science (MBS) program began in the fall of 2009. The mission of the program is to help students become stronger applicants to professional schools. The program provides preparation for the professional study of medicine, both osteopathic (D.O.) and allopathic (M.D.), dentistry, pharmacy, and many other health-related sciences. This full-time program provides broad biomedical education, which will serve as a foundation to allow candidates to be successful in professional school, while at the same time fills gaps in their knowledge of basic biology and human disease.

Curriculum

The MBS program has been updated to better serve the students. The MBS program will now have multiple tracks. The tracks will include a Pre-Medical/Dental, a Pre-Pharmacy, and general Pre-Health professional track. Each track would require a total of 34 hours. MBS students will have their own dedicated classes taught primarily by medical school faculty. This will allow the classes to be tailored to the needs of the MBS students. The classes will be taught in the trimester system, which will allow flexibility for the students. In addition, students will now have their choice of electives to complement the core requirements of their program. The programs are listed below.

Premedical/Dental track:

25 of the 34 required hours would consist of MBS Gross Anatomy I & II, MBS Physiology I & II, MBS Current Topics I, II, & III and MBS Biochemistry I & II.

Pre-Physical Therapy track:

25 of the 34 required hours would consist of MBS Gross Anatomy I & II, MBS Physiology I & II, MBS Current Topics I, II, & III and MBS Biochemistry I & II.

Pre-pharmacy:

26 of the 34 required hours would consist of MBS Physiology I & II, MBS Current Topics I, II, & III, MBS Biochemistry I & II, MBS Immunology, MBS Human Genetics and MBS Pharmacology. (Additional unlisted courses may be used as electives)

Pre-health professional:

11 of the 34 required hours would consist of MBS Physiology I & II, and MBS Current Topics I, II, & III. Additional required courses will be added on a case-by-case basis (depending on the student’s goal). Proposed classes include MBS Human Gross Anatomy I & II, MBS Physiology I & II, MBS Histology, Cell Physiology, MBS Genetics, Research, Biochemistry 1 & II, Current Topics I & II, MBS Immunology, MBS Pharmacology, MBS Neuroscience, and Microbiology. Classes may change based on demand and/or availability.

Requirements for admission to the MBS program are:

1. Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with official transcripts including the following courses:
   1. Physics – 8 credit hours
   2. General/Inorganic Chemistry – 8 credit hours
   3. Organic Chemistry – 8 credit hours
   4. Biology – 12 credit hours
2. Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) score or Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score or Dental Admissions Test (DAT) score. The MCAT is preferred.
   • MCAT- Minimum: 495 Preferred: 500
   • GRE- Minimum: 290 Preferred: 300
   • DAT-Minimum: 15 Preferred: 17
3. Two letters of evaluation from professors, physicians, or other appropriate professionals that can speak to your potential for success in a graduate program
4. Completion of the WCU graduate admissions form
5. One page personal statement

To apply, please follow the instructions for applying to a graduate program. Applications completed after July 15 are not assured of consideration. The successful applicant will need to make a $250 nonrefundable deposit to hold a position in the class. The deposit will be applied to the tuition upon matriculation.
