Dr. John Bailey, Professor of Physiology and Anatomy

Dr. Bailey earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from the University of Mississippi in 1982. He earned a master’s degree in exercise physiology from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1985 and then a Ph.D. in exercise physiology with cognates in anatomy/cell biology, biochemistry, and comparative physiology and a minor in physical anthropology in 1990, also from the University of Southern Mississippi. He served on the faculty at the University of Southern Mississippi  from 1992-1998 in the Department of Biological Sciences where he taught graduate students in the following courses: Human Gross Anatomy, Histology, Embryology, and Functional and Ecological Morphology. He also taught undergraduates in Comparative Anatomy, Histology, Embryology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, and Introductory Biology courses. In addition, Dr. Bailey was heavily involved in advising pre-professional students while at USM.

From 1998-2009 Dr. Bailey served on the faculty at Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, receiving tenure in 2003. While at MSUCVM, he became the course leader for both semesters of Veterinary Gross  and Developmental Anatomy. He was the sole instructor for Veterinary Histology, and both semesters of Veterinary Physiology. He also participated in the Veterinary Neuroscience course and taught graduate students in  cardiovascular and respiratory physiology. During his time at MSUCVM, Dr. Bailey authored a chapter on muscle physiology and coauthored another chapter on the spinal control of posture and movement in Duke’s Physiology of Domestic Animals. Duke’s is the world’s best known veterinary physiology textbook. Also while at MSU, he received the Carl Norden/Pfizer Distinguished Teaching Award in 2000 and in 2004, and the Dean’s Pegasus Award for Teaching in 2001.

Dr. Bailey’s primary research interests are in muscle physiology (skeletal, smooth, and cardiac) and the neural control and metabolism of muscle tissue. He has secondary interests in general cell physiology, the cellular uptake of materials, and cell biology related to cancer. He is a member of the American Physiological Society, the American Association of Anatomists, and the American Society for Cell Biology.
