Master of Biomedical Science Degree Program

Founded in 1906, William Carey University is a fully accredited Christian University located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The University currently offers bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, and the doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.) degrees. The first medical school class began in the fall of 2010.

The Master of Biomedical Science (MBS) program at William Carey University was established in 2009 to offer post baccalaureate students an opportunity to pursue graduate studies in the biomedical sciences. The program provides preparation for the professional study of medicine, both osteopathic (D.O.) and allopathic (M.D.), dentistry, and many other health-related sciences. The program also offers students a versatile nonthesis Master’s degree that can be used for career preparation in science education, biomedical research, and for preparation for doctoral studies in the biomedical sciences.

Graduate students in the MBS program will take courses alongside first year medical students in William Carey’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM).  The curriculum places emphasis on structure and function in a medical context. The curriculum consists of the following courses which are scheduled over approximately ten months:

Fall:

Human Gross Anatomy - 6 credit hours
Medical Histology – 7 credit hours
Embryology & Medical Genetics – 4 credit hours

Spring:

Medical Physiology  (9 cr hrs) OR Medical Biochemistry (8 cr hrs)
Medical Neuroanatomy - 3 credit hours
Medical Immunology – 3 credit hours 
Current Topics in Biomedical Science - 3 credit hours

TOTAL = 34-35 credit hours

Requirements for admission to the MBS program are:

  1. Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with official transcripts including the following courses:
    1. Physics – 8 credit hours 
    2. General/Inorganic Chemistry – 8 credit hours
    3. Organic Chemistry – 8 credit hours
    4. Biology – 12 credit hours
  2. Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) score or Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score or Dental Admissions Test (DAT) score. The MCAT is preferred.
  3. Three letters of evaluation from professors, physicians, or other appropriate professionals that can speak to your potential for success in a graduate program
  4. Completion of the WCU graduate admissions form
  5. One page personal statement

To apply, please download the WCU Graduate Application Form, and follow the attached instructions. The fall 2012 deadline is July 1, although applications will be considered as they are received beginning in January 2012. Applications received after July 1 are not assured of consideration. The successful applicant will need to make a $750 nonrefundable deposit to hold a position in the class. The deposit will be applied to the tuition upon matriculation. Class size will be limited to 20 students.
