Clinical Sciences
Year 1 Clinical Course Descriptions
OMS 7110 - Physical Diagnosis
Physical Diagnosis introduces the student to the examination of the human body. Emphasis is placed on understanding the importance of the history and physical examination as the foundational clinical skills for the physician. Topics presented and practiced will include: (1) interviewing and history-taking; (2) performing the physical examination; (3) integrating osteopathic principles and practice; (4) recognizing normal, pathological, and pathophysiology states; and (5) making clinical judgments.
OMS 7120 - Introduction to Clinical, Community and Behavioral Medicine (ICCBM)
ICCBM presents an integrated biological-behavioral-community approach to medicine. Communication skills, professionalism, medical ethics, and jurisprudence will be presented through case studies and lectures. Regional and cultural factors will be analyzed. Special topics will include aspects of current healthcare delivery, preventive medicine, substance abuse, and the avoidance of medical errors. Critical thought processes will be emphasized.
OMS 7130 - Epidemiology
Epidemiology introduces the student to the causes and distribution of diseases and events in human populations, emphasizing the historical importance, relevant data and biostatistics, study designs, investigation procedures, and applications. This course will focus on the holistic, population-based approach to identification, treatment, and prevention of diseases, in keeping with osteopathic medical philosophy.
OMS 7140 - Disaster Medicine
Disaster Medicine introduces the student to personal and community disaster preparedness. The course will use an “all hazards” approach to disaster medicine education.
OMS 7150 - Osteopathic Principles and Practice (OP&P)
OP&P introduces the student to the philosophic, anatomic, and physiologic basis of osteopathic practice. The course content is presented through weekly lectures and clinical skills training sessions (labs). Course topics include the history of osteopathic medicine, patient medical history, observation, and physical examination focused on palpation and motion testing. The course correlates human anatomy and physiology with the study of neuromusculoskeletal function and dysfunction. Diagnosis of somatic dysfunction will be integrated with learning basic systems for its treatment.
OMS 7160 - Oral Health
Recognizing that oral disease is a significant source of morbidity in a high percentage of the population, this course is designed to acquaint the medical student with common conditions affecting the oral region. Mechanisms and prevention of dental caries and periodontal disease will be presented. Oral manifestations of systemic diseases, especially those associated with medical therapy, will be covered.
OMS 7170 - ENT
Otolaryngology introduces the student to the diseases and disorders of the head and neck as well as review head and neck anatomy, and examination techniques taught in Physical Diagnosis.
