2008-2009 Cheerleading Tryout Information

  • Held Saturday, April 19th at 10:00 A.M. in Clinton Gymnasium on campus.
  • Doors will open at 9:00 A.M. You will have from 9:00 – 9:20 to warm up.
  • From 9:30-9:45 you will learn a chant that you will have to perform later in tryouts.  We will start promptly at 10:00.
  • Tryouts are closed to the public, this includes parents. Tryouts should be done by Noon.

What to Wear

Black shorts, a red or white t-shirt (not too big), and tennis shoes.  Please wear your hair pulled back away from your face.  Absolutely no jewelry should be worn. Girls, please wear a little make-up but do not over do it.

What to Bring With You

Your application if you have not submitted it beforehand, a bottle of water, and proof of insurance (a copy of your insurance card will do).

What to expect at tryouts

  • Come prepared with your own cheer (which must include two different jumps; one must be a toe touch).
  • You will be taught a short chant before tryouts begin that you will perform with a small group.
  • You will be required to perform the following jumps: 2 toe touches in a row, right and left herkie, right and left hurdlers, and a pike.
  • Be prepared to stunt with guys or girls.  You must be willing to learn to be a flyer, base, or back spot. We will spend about 30-45 minutes after everyone has performed their cheer and the chant to stunt. This is the time to display your stunting skills.
  • Tumbling is not required, but is a bonus. If you can tumble, you will be allowed to perform a tumbling pass or basic tumbling skills after you perform your personal cheer. We will have a spotter for standing skills only.
  • Each person will have a 2 minute interview with the coach.

General Information on the squad:

  • The squad will consist of 10 to 12 people; Guys and Girls.
  • The WCU cheerleading squad cheers at all men’s and women’s home games.
  • The squad will attend a summer camp. This is mandatory and not excusable. Work is not an excuse.
  • Practices are mandatory! We have practice twice a week. Work is not an excuse.
  • Each member is required to fulfill workout hours every week.
  • The squad does make personal appearances for the university that are mandatory.
  • If you do not know how to tumble, you must be willing to learn.
  • If you make the squad, we ask that you do not schedule night classes at all during the Winter Tri unless that is the absolute only time the class is offered. The Winter Tri is when all of the basketball games are.
  • Once the squad has been chosen, a captain and co-captain will be chosen.

The William Carey University Cheerleading Squad is a great experience. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication but it is extremely rewarding in the end.
