Admission to the School of Nursing

Thank you for your interest in the Joseph and Nancy Fail School of Nursing at William Carey University. We hope the following information is helpful to you. Feel free to contact us with any questions or to see a nursing advisor.
 

1. Admission to the School of Nursing is a separate process. Admission to the university does not mean that the student has been admitted to the School of Nursing.
2. The School of Nursing operates in accordance with requirements of state and national accreditation bodies. Planning related to curriculum, course scheduling, and staffing a remade with consideration being given to these requirements. Admission is competitive for the designated number of students that can be accepted.
3. Nursing classes are admitted in the Fall and Spring trimesters. All pre-requisite courses do not have to be completed prior to application but the student must have successfully completed pre-requisite courses prior to starting the nursing major.
4. Once admitted to nursing on one campus, all nursing courses must be taken on that campus.
5. Admission to nursing is competitive and is based on:
   1. Pre-admission exam score (HESI)
      1. The test is offered each Fall and Spring at WCU. The cost is $35 payable at the Business Office.
      2. The test is given by appointment during October and April and is part of the application for nursing.
      3. The receipt and a photo ID are required for admission to the exam.
      4. Minimum composite score of 75 is required for consideration for admission.
      5. The exam consists of five sections. Minimum scores on four of the five sections are required for consideration for admission. The minimum scores are as follows:
         1. Reading Comprehension 80
         2. Math 75
         3. Grammar 75
         4. Vocabulary 75
         5. Anatomy & Physiology – no minimum
      6. The exam can be taken a total of three times at six-month intervals.
   2. GPA – Minimum of 2.5 in the courses counting toward the BSN degree is required for consideration for admission.
   3. Hours taken at William Carey University
6. English Proficiency Exam:
   1. Students are encouraged to take and pass the EPE or ENG 105 prior to admission to nursing.
   2. The student must accomplish English proficiency before LEVEL II or progression will be halted.
   3. The EPE can be taken only once.
7. Computer requirement:
   1. Students are encouraged to meet the computer requirement for William Carey University prior to admission to nursing.
   2. The student must accomplish computer proficiency before LEVEL II or progression will be halted. 
   3.  The requirement may be met in one of two ways:
      1. Pass BUS 102 or its equivalent; or
      2. Pass the Computer Proficiency Exam.
8. Previous Failures
   1. Students having recently made two Ds or Fs in nursing clinical courses are ineligible to apply.
   2. Students having recently made two Ds or Fs in the same non-clinical course are ineligible to apply.
   3. Students with two nursing failures at another institution will not be admitted to the nursing major at William Carey University.  Applicants with one nursing failure at another institution will have that failure counted at William Carey University.
   4. Students having made two Ds or Fs in nursing courses five or more years ago must submit a written appeal to the nursing APG committee for permission to apply.
