Online School Counseling Endorsement Program
The Online School Counseling Endorsement program is designed to assist individuals holding a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree achieve school counselor licensure in the State of Mississippi.
The endorsement program adds 18-24 hours to an individual’s 30 hour M.Ed. degree thereby meeting the minimum 48 hour degree requirement for school counseling licensure in Mississippi. Both EDU 640 Curriculum Planning (3hrs) and PSY 620 Introduction to Research (3hrs) are waived for students who completed equivalent courses during their M.Ed. (assuming a grade of at least "B" in each course) reducing the required number of hours for the endorsement to 18 (six courses).
Two of the eight required courses are not currently planned for full online delivery: PSY 573, Fundamentals of School Counseling and PSY 698, Internship in School Counseling. Both courses require at least some visits to the university (5 seminars for PSY 698 spaced at two week intervals and 5-10 seminars for PSY 573). PSY 698 is conducted as a seminar (5 two hour meetings spaced two weeks apart over the ten week term) and requires fieldwork that can be completed within the school district of the student’s choice with instructor and programmatic approval. Program faculty are considering methods for shifting PSY 573 to partial and perhaps full online delivery.
The endorsement program can be completed in approximately one calendar year when students register for all available online courses each term (1-2 courses per ten week term across four terms).
The Online School Counseling Endorsement program requires applicants to meet the following minimum standards:
- hold Master of Education degree (assumed to be at least 30hrs)
- hold a valid Mississippi "AA" Educator License
- successful completion of PRAXIS I
- 2.5 minimum GPA on the last 64hrs of coursework
- complete application to the WCU Graduate School
All applicant files meeting minimum standards will be considered by the Admissions Committee.
