Specialist Degree in Higher Education Administration

This specialist program is designed to prepare experienced practitioners for mid-level to senior administrative and policy-making posts. The program prepares future administrators to carry out the day-to-day management decisions that must be addressed by successful leaders in colleges and universities. This program addresses several areas of interest in higher education today, including:

  • Administrative and legal issues in higher education
  • Academic and student affairs
  • Finance and economics of higher education
  • Organization of higher education

The Higher Education Administration program is committed to the practical preparation of administrators and educators in a range of higher education environments. The majority of students in the program are part-time students with full-time jobs in two and four-year academic institutions.

The program prepares students for positions in four-year, community and technical colleges, and universities. Students interested in careers as future higher education administrators receive a comprehensive program of study that explores academic affairs, student affairs, and administrative affairs. Courses offered in the program develop knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for success in higher education administration.

Students who complete this program will understand the process of research and be able to apply research findings pertaining to higher education administration in a practical setting. The curriculum also provides an excellent foundation for students who want to continue their studies and enroll in a doctoral program in higher education administration.

Coursework for the Specialist in Higher Education Administration program totals 33 hours and may be completed in less than two years with continuous part-time enrollment of no more than two courses per term. Instruction is delivered by skilled practitioners with real-world higher education administration experience. Courses are offered in evening and Saturday formats as well as online in order to accommodate the busy schedules of full-time education professionals.
