Sequence of Steps to Licensure

Admission to the college. You must submit ACT scores and high school transcripts if you seek admission as a freshman. If you transfer from a community/junior college or another four-year institution, you must also submit transcripts of all work completed. These transcripts will be evaluated by the registrar, and course work that is accepted will be used in your program
General Core. All students must complete the general core requirements before being admitted to the teacher education program. These core requirements vary for the Bachelor of Science, the Bachelor of Arts, and the Bachelor of Music degrees.
Admission to Teacher Education.
You must do the following to be admitted to the teacher education program:
- Complete the 44-46 hour liberal arts core with a grade point average of 2.5 or better. Note: You must make a C or better in English 101 and 102.
- Take and pass PRAXIS I:
- Reading 170 (CBT 316)
- Writing 172 (CBT 318)
- Mathematics 169 (CBT 314)
OR
- Have high school ACT scores of 21 or higher (composite), and no subscore below 18.
- Make application for admission to Teacher Education. Copies of this form are available in the Department of Education office.
NOTE: Elementary majors are limited to taking only nine hours of courses with an EDU prefix prior to admission to teacher education. Secondary majors are limited to six hours of EDU courses prior to admission. No 400 level courses may be taken prior to being officially admitted to teacher education. All candidates must be admitted to teacher education at least one trimester prior to student teaching.
- Take specialty courses. In your area of specialization, you will need to complete the required courses plus the professional education courses.
- Take professional education and advanced specialty courses.
- Make application for student teaching.
- Complete 13 weeks of student teaching . Student teaching is generally reserved as your last course. Under special conditions and with the approval of the chair of the education department, you make a limited number of hours after student teaching.
- Complete all requirements and graduate.
- Complete appropriate paperwork, request transcripts to be sent to the Mississippi Department of Education, and submit licensure request to the Office of the Registrar to be signed.
