Department of Philosophy
As the basis for all disciplines of investigation and research, philosophy orients the student to critical and logical thinking, reflective thought, and the development of philosophical issues, personalities, and schools. As the foundation of the liberal arts, philosophy is ideal for students seeking a minor to complement their major areas of study either in the arts, humanities, sciences, and religion or the professional disciplines (William Carey University, 2007-2008 Catalog, p. 121).
William Carey University offers an academic minor in philosophy on the Hattiesburg campus. On the Gulfport and New Orleans campuses, the College offers introductory level philosophy and logic.
The minor in philosophy consists of eighteen semester hours, and a student is able to earn the minor during a two-year residency on the Hattiesburg campus. Within the minor, students are required to analyze both classical and contemporary works of western philosophy in the major areas of the discipline.
The minor in philosophy prepares students for graduate studies in any area, but most importantly in the humanities, religion, or other disciplines in which critical or analytical thought is required. Many students who must sit standardized tests (i.e., GRE, LSAT, NLN, MCAT, etc.) should consider philosophy as a minor that would advance their reading, writing, and reasoning abilities.
